Bhakta Salabega
Bhakta Salabega was born to a Muslim father and Brahmin mother.
He wrote many prayers glorifying Lord Jagannatha that is the most heart
touching. He was not allowed to enter the temple of Lord Jagannatha in Puri
because he was a Muslim. However, this did not stop him thinking of Lord Day
and night. He eagerly waited for the Rathajatra when Lord Jagannatha will come
out of the temple to meet HIS devotees to have a glimpse of Him. Once during
Rathajatra, Salabega was out of town and could not reach in time to see the
Lord on the chariot. He prayed to Lord Jagannatha to wait inside the chariot
until he could come and that’s what Lord did. Actually Lord Jagannatha had also
waited all year long for this moment too. How could he move without seeing his
dear devotee Salabega?
Salabega was coming from Delhi to Puri through Balasore and was
staying near the temple of Shyamsundar. During evening prayers Salabega wanted
to see the Lord inside but was not allowed to do so since he was a Muslim. One
evening the priest found that the Lord was missing from his throne. The same
night the king of Balasore had a dream that a great devotee of the Lord was
waiting outside to have a darshan of Lord. He then made arrangement for a hole
to be drilled in the wall so that Salabega could see the Lord. As soon as he
stared at the throne of the deities, the deities reappeared.
After the death of Fatima biwi when Bhakta Salabega was a kid
once he got stricken by a severe disease and all the doctors left the hope that
Bhakta Salabega can survive. One day when he was on bed he heard the Bhajan’s
and thought the great lord Jagannatha who is the god of world will be able to
cure me. Then he started praying lord Jagannatha and finally got cured. After
that he became a great devotee of lord Jagannatha. But for that reason he was
discarded from his own house. Then he started moving here to there uttering the
name of lord Jagannatha all times. Finally he went to Puri. It was the car
festival time and the chariots were getting pulled Salabega was not allowed to
see lord Jagannatha on the chariot as he was the son of a Muslim. So resided on
a house which is very nearer to Srimandira. When the chariot of lord Jagannatha
came nearer to his house he started weeping. Suddenly the chariot stopped
there. And Salabega watched the God happily and there after all the things were
made known to the priests.The place where the cart remained stationary to give
darzana to Salabega was later used by Salabega for composing his many bhajans
in honour of Lord Jagannatha. His body was cremated there after his death. The
samadhi of this great devotee is still standing on the Grand road in Puri and
his bhajans will be forever sang, and remembered by the devotees of Lord
Jagannatha. Then he got the respects of a great devotee by the blessings of the
lord Jagannatha.
Another Story of Bhakta Salabega
Once, as a child or young man, Salabega became very ill,and the
attending physicians thought he would die.Salabega miraculously recovered when
he heard some devotees singing bhajanas (devotional songs) about Krasna and
Jagannatha and he began chanting Jagannatha’s names.This was a pivotal moment
in his devotional life.He remembered his mother’s description of Visnu’s rescue
of Gajendra,the king of the elephants, when chased by a crocodile. Like Dhruva
Maharaja and Sri Prahlada,Salabega had inten se childlike faith in the mercy of
the Lord.

Translation: After the cow Kamadhenu the calf runs for milk.

Translation: My father is a Moughal soldier, my mother a Brahmin.

Tells abject Salabega of Muslim caste
I know nothing other than the feet of Sriranga.

ଭକ୍ତ ସାଲାବେଗା ଜଣେ ମୁସଲମାନ ପିତା ଏବଂ ବ୍ରାହ୍ମଣ ମାତାଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଜନ୍ମ ହୋଇଥିଲେ। ସେ ଭଗବାନ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କୁ ଗ ifying ରବାନ୍ୱିତ କରି ଅନେକ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା ଲେଖିଥିଲେ ଯାହା ଅତ୍ୟନ୍ତ ହୃଦୟସ୍ପର୍ଶୀ ଅଟେ | ସେ ମୁସଲମାନ ଥିବାରୁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ପୁରୀର ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ମନ୍ଦିରରେ ପ୍ରବେଶ କରିବାକୁ ଦିଆଯାଇନଥିଲା। ଅବଶ୍ୟ, ଏହା ତାଙ୍କୁ ଦିନରାତି ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ ଭାବିବାରେ ଅଟକାଇଲା ନାହିଁ | ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ତାଙ୍କ ଭକ୍ତଙ୍କୁ ଭେଟିବା ପାଇଁ ମନ୍ଦିରରୁ ବାହାରକୁ ଆସିବା ପରେ ସେ ଉତ୍ସାହର ସହିତ ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରିଥିଲେ। ଥରେ ରଥଜତ୍ର ସମୟରେ ସାଲାବେଗା ସହର ବାହାରେ ଥିଲା ଏବଂ ରଥରେ ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖିବା ପାଇଁ ଠିକ୍ ସମୟରେ ପହଞ୍ଚି ପାରି ନଥିଲା | ସେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କଲେ ଯେ ସେ ଆସିବା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ରଥ ଭିତରେ ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରନ୍ତୁ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରଭୁ ତାହା କରିଛନ୍ତି। ବାସ୍ତବରେ ଭଗବାନ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ମଧ୍ୟ ଏହି ମୁହୂର୍ତ୍ତ ପାଇଁ ବର୍ଷସାରା ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରିଥିଲେ | ସେ ତାଙ୍କର ପ୍ରିୟ ଭକ୍ତ ସାଲାବେଗାଙ୍କୁ ନ ଦେଖି କିପରି ଗତି କରିପାରନ୍ତି?
ସାଲାବେଗା ଦିଲ୍ଲୀରୁ ପୁରୀକୁ ବାଲାସୋର ଦେଇ ଆସୁଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ଶ୍ୟାମସୁନ୍ଦର ମନ୍ଦିର ନିକଟରେ ରହିଥିଲେ। ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା ସମୟରେ ସାଲାବେଗା ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କୁ ଭିତରକୁ ଦେଖିବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଥିଲେ କିନ୍ତୁ ସେ ଜଣେ ମୁସଲମାନ ହୋଇଥିବାରୁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଅନୁମତି ଦିଆଯାଇନଥିଲା | ଦିନେ ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟାରେ ପୁରୋହିତ ଦେଖିଲେ ଯେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ତାଙ୍କ ସିଂହାସନରୁ ନିଖୋଜ ଅଛନ୍ତି। ସେହି ଦିନ ରାତିରେ ବାଲାସୋରର ରାଜା ଏକ ସ୍ୱପ୍ନ ଦେଖିଲେ ଯେ ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ଜଣେ ମହାନ ଭକ୍ତ ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ଏକ ଦର୍ଶନ ପାଇବାକୁ ବାହାରେ ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରିଥିଲେ। ତା’ପରେ ସେ କାନ୍ଥରେ ଏକ ଛିଦ୍ର ଖୋଳିବା ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା କଲେ ଯାହା ଦ୍ Sal ାରା ସାଲାବେଗା ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖି ପାରିବେ। ସେ ଦେବତାମାନଙ୍କ ସିଂହାସନକୁ ଚାହିଁବା ମାତ୍ରେ ଦେବତାମାନେ ପୁନର୍ବାର ଆବିର୍ଭାବ ହେଲେ।
ଫାତିମା ବିବିଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପରେ ଯେତେବେଳେ ଭକ୍ତ ସାଲାବେଗା ଏକ ଶିଶୁ ଥିଲେ ଥରେ ସେ ଏକ ଭୟଙ୍କର ରୋଗରେ ଆକ୍ରାନ୍ତ ହୋଇଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ଭକ୍ତ ସାଲାବେଗା ବଞ୍ଚି ପାରିବେ ବୋଲି ସମସ୍ତ ଡାକ୍ତର ଆଶା ଛାଡିଥିଲେ। ଦିନେ ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେ ଶଯ୍ୟାରେ ଥିଲେ ସେ ଭଜନଙ୍କ କଥା ଶୁଣିଲେ ଏବଂ ଭାବିଲେ ମହାନ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ଯିଏ ଜଗତର ଦେବତା ମୋତେ ଭଲ କରି ପାରିବେ। ତା’ପରେ ସେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା କରିବା ଆରମ୍ଭ କଲେ ଏବଂ ଶେଷରେ ସୁସ୍ଥ ହୋଇଗଲେ | ଏହା ପରେ ସେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କର ଜଣେ ମହାନ ଭକ୍ତ ହେଲେ | କିନ୍ତୁ ସେଥିପାଇଁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ନିଜ ଘରୁ ତ୍ୟାଗ କରାଯାଇଥିଲା। ତା’ପରେ ସେ ସର୍ବଦା ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ନାମ ଉଚ୍ଚାରଣ କରି ସେଠାକୁ ଯିବା ଆରମ୍ଭ କଲେ | ଶେଷରେ ସେ ପୁରୀକୁ ଗଲେ। ଏହା କାର୍ ଫେଷ୍ଟିଭାଲ୍ ସମୟ ଥିଲା ଏବଂ ରଥଗୁଡିକ ଟାଣାଯାଉଥିଲା ସାଲାବେଗାଙ୍କୁ ମୁସଲମାନର ପୁତ୍ର ଥିବାରୁ ରଥ ଉପରେ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖିବାକୁ ଅନୁମତି ଦିଆଯାଇନଥିଲା | ତେଣୁ ଶ୍ରୀମନ୍ଦିରାର ଅତି ନିକଟ ଏକ ଘରେ ରହିଲେ | ଯେତେବେଳେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ରଥ ତାଙ୍କ ଘରକୁ ଆସିଲା ସେତେବେଳେ ସେ କାନ୍ଦିବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲା। ହଠାତ୍ ରଥ ସେଠାରେ ଅଟକି ଗଲା। ଏବଂ ସମସ୍ତ ଜିନିଷ ପୁରୋହିତମାନଙ୍କୁ ଜଣାଇବା ପରେ ସାଲାବେଗା ଭଗବାନଙ୍କୁ ଖୁସିରେ ଦେଖୁଥିଲେ | ଯେଉଁଠାରେ ସଲାବେଗାକୁ ଦାରଜାନା ଦେବା ପାଇଁ କାର୍ଟ ସ୍ଥିର ରହିଥିଲା ସେହି ସ୍ଥାନ ପରେ ପରେ ସଲାବେଗା ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ସମ୍ମାନାର୍ଥେ ତାଙ୍କର ଅନେକ ଭଜନ ରଚନା କରିଥିଲେ | ତାଙ୍କ ମୃତଦେହ ସେଠାରେ ଶବଦାହ କରାଯାଇଥିଲା। ଏହି ମହାନ ଭକ୍ତଙ୍କ ସମାଦୀ ପୁରୀର ଗ୍ରାଣ୍ଡ ରାସ୍ତାରେ ଠିଆ ହୋଇଛି ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କର ଭଜନ ସବୁଦିନ ପାଇଁ ଗାନ କରାଯିବ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ଭକ୍ତମାନେ ସ୍ମରଣ କରିବେ। ତା’ପରେ ସେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ଆଶୀର୍ବାଦରେ ଜଣେ ମହାନ ଭକ୍ତଙ୍କ ସମ୍ମାନ ପାଇଲେ

ଥରେ, ଶିଶୁ କିମ୍ବା ଯୁବକ ଭାବରେ, ସାଲାବେଗା ଅତ୍ୟଧିକ ଅସୁସ୍ଥ ହୋଇପଡିଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ଉପସ୍ଥିତ ଡାକ୍ତରମାନେ ଭାବିଥିଲେ ଯେ ସେ ମରିଯିବେ। ସାଲାବେଗା ଚମତ୍କାର ଭାବରେ ସୁସ୍ଥ ହୋଇଗଲେ ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେ କିଛି ଭକ୍ତଙ୍କ କୃଷ୍ଣ ଏବଂ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ବିଷୟରେ ଭଜନ (ଭକ୍ତି ଗୀତ) ଗାଉଥିବାର ଶୁଣିଲେ ଏବଂ ସେ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥଙ୍କ ନାମ ଜପ କରିବାକୁ ଲାଗିଲେ। ତାଙ୍କର ଭକ୍ତ ଜୀବନରେ ଏକ ପ୍ରମୁଖ ମୁହୂର୍ତ୍ତ। ସେ କୁମ୍ଭୀର ଦ୍ୱାରା ଗୋଡ଼ାଇ ଗୋଡ଼ାଇଥିବା ବେଳେ ହାତୀମାନଙ୍କର ରାଜା ଗଜେନ୍ଦ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ବିଷ୍ଣୁଙ୍କ ଉଦ୍ଧାର ବିଷୟରେ ସେ ତାଙ୍କ ମାତାଙ୍କ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନାକୁ ମନେ ରଖିଥିଲେ। ଧ୍ରୁଭା ମହାରାଜା ଏବଂ ଶ୍ରୀ ପ୍ରହ୍ଲାଦଙ୍କ ପରି ସାଲାବେଗା ମଧ୍ୟ ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ଦୟାରେ ଶିଶୁ ଭଳି ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରିଥିଲେ।
